► Was it the ultimate AMG?

There’s been many shock and awe AMGs over the years, but few have hit quite as hard as the CLK63 AMG Black Series. Launched in 2007, AMG’s engineers took a ‘regular’ hot CLK and tuned it to within an inch of its life, instantly taking it from a BMW M3 alternative to a genuine rival for the Porsche 911 GT3.

Powered by a 500bhp variant of Mercedes’ legendary M156 engine, the CLK63 Black Series was one of the cars of the decade, blending the brawny, brutish power of a devilish GT cruiser, with the handling prowess of a chassis far lighter than its 1.8-tonne kerbweight would suggest. Calm and comfortable one moment, savagely fast the next. In short, it was the ultimate AMG.
