Getting some air in your 911: Porsche unveils rooftop camping option

► Porsche Tequipment option out this autumn
► The cost? A cool €4980, or £4400…

You might have assumed that people who own Porsche 911s are high-fliers. Now it seems as if they are high-rise campers, too – after Zuffenhausen launched an official new roof tent option for its venerable sports car.

It’s an official Porsche Tequipment option costing a stout €4980 on mainland Europe, or roughly £4400 in the UK. First deliveries are promised for November 2022, just in time for winter.

Porsche 911 rooftop tent: the lowdown

This is an integrated tent that unpacks from a hard case compact enough to fit on the (optional) roof bars of a 911. It’s no third-party item a marketing whizz stumbled upon in China – this was engineered and designed in Weissach, Porsche promises.

When erected, the accommodation pops out into a two-person tent with windows on either side. Floorspace is claimed to cover 210cm x 130cm and an integrated double foam mattress provides the bedding.

Justifying that sky-high cost is some neat detailing: the ‘headboard’ features luxury quilting to match the mattress and the side windows mimic the shape of the rear windowline on a 911. They can be left open or be covered by black-out blinds for sleeping.

Will the Porsche tent fit any 911?

Not quite. Most 992 models should take the roof tent, but sadly not GT, Cabriolet or Targa models, as the hardcase package weighs 56kg. Top speed with the roof box in place is pegged back to 85mph.

Options and lifestyle accessories are big business: Porsche will soon follow the rooftop tent with a heated blanket and shoe/bag organiser, it warns. Getting back to one with nature will never be quite the same again…
