Why we should all take the driving test again

Chris Chilton argues for regular retesting of all drivers

Anyone see Jo Brand campaigning to get old drivers off the road on telly the other night? She reckoned British drivers over 70 should be forced to take another driving test, something I totally support.

But I’d go a step further. I’d make us all re-sit our test every 10 years. I’m sure someone can tell me why this just isn’t feasible – there probably aren’t enough examiners to make it work, and it would generate an underclass of unlicensed drivers if not carefully policed – but it would surely make the roads safer.

Those of us who pride ourselves on our driving have nothing to fear. If we put pride to one side we might even admit that a spot of retraining might do us good. Those that need real help will get it and those that shouldn’t be on the road would be removed.

By the way, did anyone notice the 102-year-old bloke’s Mini Metro? Haven’t seen one that tidy since 1984!
