The LS comes with gadgets galore and superb refinement and is a leftfield rival to the 7-series, A8 and S-class. The LS600h has hybrid power, four-wheel-drive, an eight-speed gearbox and a camera that can tell if you’re about to hit something. 60sec road test
Choose a petrol V8 in the LS460 or the full-fat LS600h hybrid, the most likely choice if you’ve gone to the bother of investigating the top-dog Lexus. ‘More refined than Asda white bread and about as interesting’ said our scathing GBU comment in CAR magazine. Which has a point. This is a bland kind of Japanese luxury - but there’s no arguing with the equipment and bank-vault-spec quality on offer. It’s about as well built as a machine-made car is capable of and there are lashings of space onboard too. The drive is memorable for its extraordinary refinement; it’s whisper-quiet and the hybrid version is extraordinarily peaceful. Just a shame that it’s also bereft of any kind of motoring pleasure.
The one we’d buy
The one we’d avoid like the plague
Not sure we’d bother with the LS460
Rivals to consider
Audi A8, BMW 7-series, Jaguar XJ, Mercedes S-class, Tesla Model S
Beautifully built, amazing refinement, goodies galore, slick hybrid
Anonymous and hard to look past S-class polish or Tesla’s new-world luxury
