The Mazda 6 is a highly rated family car to rival the Mondeo/Insignia class. Pick from a four-door saloon and a five-door estate. For more information on the Mazda 6, click on our further stories on the links below.
60sec road test
Don’t be deceived by the perceived size of the Mazda 6. This is a deceptively large car, bordering on full executive class length at 4865mm. What that guarantees is lashings of interior space - the cabin is very roomy, and there’s a good 489-litre boot in the saloon, rising to 506 litres in the Mazda 6 Estate. Flop the rear seats down, and that swells to 1648 litres. Huge! This model benefits from the company’s Skyactive programme, which means there are no hybrids but a suite of optimised petrol and diesel engines driving the front wheels. It drives well and we like the chunky styling, too. Mazdas have an enviable reputation for reliability and we rank the 6 as a classy alternative to the usual repmobile fodder.
The one we’d buy
A classy estate in Soul Red, please
The one we’d avoid like the plague
2.2 175 seems a bit excessive to us
Rivals to consider
Ford Mondeo, Volvo S60, VW Passat
Classy style inside and out, clever fuel-saving thinking, slick drive
Not quite as posh as the Germans it so desperately wants to dislodge
