The Mercedes-Benz G-class is also known as the G-wagen, short for Geländewagen or cross-country vehicle. Think of it as Daimler's answer to the Land Rover Defender - but Merc's is still on sale. For more information on the G-class, click on our further stories on the links below.
60sec road test
Is there a cooler hard-core off-roader on sale today? The G-class is devilishly appealing - with four decades of heritage behind it and the box-like looks to prove it. Just don't go expecting anything soft, modern or pampering... you have to work hard at driving the G, but that's half the appeal. You'll surely never be left stranded if you drive one of these - with more locking differentials and axle articulation than you'll ever need at the local gymkhana. It's practical, too, with a 2250-litre boot and a tow bar as standard. This is a niche car, but one we unashamedly have a soft spot for, despite those sky-high £90k+ prices.
The one we’d buy
The one we’d avoid like the plague
Mercedes-AMG G 63... unless you're very well endowed
Rivals to consider
Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender, Toyota Land Cruiser
Damn cool, go-anywhere rock-crawling ability, should see you out
It's expensive - you'll need at least £90k to get into the cheapest. Agricultural, too...
