Merc ML not big enough? Then the Mercedes-Benz GL-class is for you. The supersized Merc SUV packs three rows of seats to accommodate seven, proper off-road ability (like real owners need that!) and chunky looks. 60sec road test
This is the giant of the SUV scene, a huge 4x4 that’s supersized to beyond 5.1 metres long. That girth means there’s space for three rows of seats and, just like the Land Rover Discovery, you’ll fit in all seven seats comfortably. The flip side is that this car often feels too big for Europe’s roads; you might pine for the wider lanes of America, where space is less of an issue. It makes for a practical family car otherwise, but the GL is betraying its decade-old roots with a drive that’s not as competitive as rivals’. Refinement is ok, but the performance and handling are muted. It’s also pricey, costing from £60k and the madcap AMG one tops out at beyond £90k. Startling.
