The Mercedes-Benz GLA is the smallest SUV the company makes - and a member of the swelling A-class family. That means you can spec it in front- or four-wheel drive, and with a variety of petrol and diesel engines, culminating in the GLA45 AMG. 60sec road test
This car continues the general trend of the A-class family: it’s a neat enough drive and packs some clever technological surprises, but it lacks any real sparkle in the driving dymamics. ‘It’s accomplished if a little uninspired,’ we noted when we first drove it. That’s not to detract from a focus on refinement and comfort, though. While we didn’t enjoy driving it as much as some rivals, we actually thought the added ride height and different suspension settings improved the ride quality over the sometimes crashy A-class hatchback. Just remember to sense-check your wheel and chassis settings to get the best from the comfort on offer. The interior is a nice place to sit and feels well crafted; you’ll feel smugger than a Yeti owner would.
The one we’d buy
The one we’d avoid like the plague
Rivals to consider
Audi Q3, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Qashqai
Lovely cabin, comfort, zeitgesity positioning
Not much more practical than the hatchback, steep prices
