60sec road test
Daimler was an early pioneer of the breed of premium SUVs and beat Audi, BMW and others to market back in 1998. Now on its third iteration, the latest M-class is a nice to drive SUV, but somehow lacks stand-out in any one area. It’s not as sporting as a Porsche Cayenne. It’s not as roomy as a Land Rover Discovery. Not as polished as a BMW X5. It lacks many of its rivals’ seven-seater options - you’ll need to trade up to a GL if you want three rows of seats. The entry-level ML250 Bluetec now comes with a four-cylinder engine, with some correspondingly impressive drops in emissions though you might expect some multi-cylinder timbre at this price point.

The one we’d avoid like the plague
Rivals to consider
BMW X5, Land Rover Discovery, Porsche Cayenne
Great engines, strong discounts available, good to drive
Doesn’t shine in any one area, lacks seven-seat option
