Background
Not a car for purists but that won’t stop hordes of people buying it. The Audi Q5-based Macan is the smaller, more accessible, more agile and more likeable sibling to the Cayenne and, prejudices aside, it’s a very good car indeed. 60sec road test
It’s a sports car not an SUV says Porsche. Incredibly, we agree. The Macan is excellent to drive and handles better than a 4x4 has any right to. Although its roots lie in the Audi Q5, it feels very different. You certainly wouldn’t confuse them. There are three engines initially, all of them 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6s and all of them great. There’s a diesel, a moderately powerful petrol, and the top Macan Turbo model with 395bhp and 0-62mph in under five seconds. This is a car that puts the Sports in Sports Utility Vehicle.
