Mercedes S-class coupé (2014) CAR scoop

Published: 17 January 2013 Updated: 26 January 2015

Mercedes is putting the finishing touches to its new S-class range, which will mushroom to five models including this CL replacement. Rebadged S-class coupé, the muscular two door will be unveiled at the 2014 Geneva motor show, and will take the fight to Bentley’s Continental GT.

Which other models are coming?

Aside from the regular saloon and long-wheelbase versions due in 2013, Daimler is plotting a four-seat, drop-top version. Its design is inspired by the four-door Ocean Drive Concept shown in 2007. Mercedes hopes this model will create an icon like the 280SE 3.5, a four-seat luxocabrio Mercedes discontinued in the mid-1970’s.

A four-door coupé, like an overgrown CLS, could complete the line-up, though Mercedes is yet to give it the green light. It would adopt the underpinnings of the forthcoming stretched S-class saloon.

The S-class family will have a consistent styling theme, differentiated by varying rear doors, window- and wheelbase-lengths.

What will power the sporty S-classes?

The engine range comprises V8 and V12 engines, the S500 running a 4.8-litre V8 producing 435bhp, and the S600 fitted with a 544bhp 6.0-litre V12. That’s an extra 50cc of capacity, to help the new hot Mercs overtake Bentley.

The sporty AMG S63 and S65 versions will run a 544bhp 5.5-litre V8 and a 630bhp version of the V12 respectively. The AMG’s makeover includes a wide, bone-shaped lower air intake, 21-inch rims, protruding wheel arches, a DTM-inspired rear diffuser and trademark four chrome-tipped tail-pipes. Expect prices to start around £95,000.
