60sec road test
The SX4 S-Cross was benchmarked against the Nissan Qashqai. A sensible decision given the Nissan’s runaway sales success. Problem is, it was benchmarked against the old Qashqai, and as a result the S-Cross already feels dated at launch. Particularly inside; the cabin is grey, plasticky and unappealing. It drives well enough though, with stable handling and a decently punchy diesel engine. Although four-wheel drive is an option we doubt many SX4 owners will be attempting any off-roading. May as well save some pennies and pick a front-drive model. A decent enough car, but one that’s difficult to recommend over fresher-feeling rivals.
The one we’d buy
The diesel offers more punch for overtaking and decent fuel economy
The one we’d avoid like the plague
CVT auto versions
Rivals to consider
Ford Kuga, Nissan Qashqai, Skoda Yeti
Drives well enough, efficient engines
Drab interior, feels dated before its time
