60sec road test
If one word sums up the Toyota Avensis, ‘beige’ about covers it. There are no glaring faults, but no sparkle either. The interior will never fall apart but it’s entirely forgettable, as is the driving experience. It got tidied up with a mid-life facelift a short while back, but we were still too comatose from driving it the first time to notice. An entirely adequate car that does its job well enough, but devoid of character.
The one we’d buy
The one we’d avoid like the plague
Rivals to consider
Ford Mondeo, Mazda 6, Peugeot 508, Vauxhall Insignia, VW Passat
Decent warranty, seven seats standard
Bland interior, access to rearmost seats tricky
