Toyota describes the Prius as the world’s favourite hybrid, and with some justification: it’s shifted more than three million of them worldwide. Now in its third generation, it was one of the first volume production cars to team up a petrol engine with an electric motor and battery pack to useful effect and has earned a legion of fans – and detractors – in the process. There’s also a plug-in version, with the ability to pre-charge the battery pack from the mains so you have maximum electric range from the get-go. 60sec road test
The current-gen Toyota Prius is still one of the best affordable hybrids and a great improvement over its predecessor. It’s more efficient and speedier than before, its automatic CVT transmission is less intrusive and there’s usable electric range around town, especially from the plug-in variant. It’s roomy, refined and easier to live with day-to-day than ever but it’s a shame it’s still zero fun to drive.
