Background
Yes, it’s boring. But it’s good. What the Polo lacks in style it makes up for with a foolproof interior and bombproof residual values. Low-tar Bluemotion version is the fuel-miser’s choice while recently updated GTI version is an overlooked hot hatch gem.
60sec road test
A Golf-in-miniature body clothes an interior that’s subdued to the point of depression but ergonomically flawless. There are some brilliant engines available, and you can have VW’s dual-clutch DSG gearbox if you want. Ride and handling are very good, even if the latter won’t put a smile on your face like a Fiesta. An excellent car overall, but a head-over-heart purchase.
The one we’d buy
1.2 TSI – or the GTI
The one we’d avoid like the plague
No real duffers in the line-up
Rivals to consider
Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 208, Renault Clio, Seat Ibiza, Suzuki Swift, Vauxhall Corsa
For
Low running costs, great engines
Against
World’s least interesting interior, servicing costs may be pricey
