Background

The V90 name is back - fitted again to the largest Volvo estate money can buy. Based on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), the oily bits from the XC90 crossover, there's a slender choice of four-cylinder-only engines: in the UK, Volvo offers three powertrains: two 2.0-litre diesels, in 187bhp and 232bhp flavours, and the flagship T8 petrol-electric hybrid.

60sec road test

The V90 is a comfy, luxurious estate in the best Volvo tradition. Space is aplenty, although outright load-lugging bragging rights don't belong in Sweden any more (blame that smartly tapered rear end). But what we genuinely applaud about the V90 is how the Swedes have unequivocally ignored the Germanic obsession with handling and performance to concentrate on a much more laidback kind of luxury. That cosseting cabin is a real boon, too - lifted straight from the XC90, but gorgeous nonetheless.
