The XC60 is Volvo’s answer to mid-size SUVs including the Audi Q5, Mercedes GLC and BMW X3. This second-generation model is based on the same ‘SPA’ architecture as the larger XC90, and features a range of four-cylinder petrol, diesel and ‘Twin Engine’ plug-in hybrid models. Each variant gets all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission as standard. Air suspension is optional, except on the highest-spec R-Design Pro and Inscription Pro models. Though now owned by Chinese company Geely, Volvo builds the XC60 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

60sec road test

The XC60 delivers so much of the capability of the larger XC90, it’s probably the better buy for most owners, and it’s unlikely rear-seat passengers will complain of insufficient legroom. Only when you need seven seats and/or a larger boot does the XC90 really come into its own.

Volvo XC60 driving

To drive, the XC60 is something of a mixed bag, however. It feels set up to prioritise comfort over dynamics, and general noise level and comfort in the car is very impressive. But the XC60 leaves room for improvement when it comes to both ride quality, which could be smoother, and handling, which could be sharper.

The one we’d buy

The one we’d avoid like the plague

T8 Twin Engine hybrid - monster fast, but expensive to buy and less economical on fuel than you might expect

Rivals to consider

Audi Q5, BMW X3, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Mercedes-Benz GLC

'A Swedish survival cell so cool and capable it can make a 14-hour stint enjoyable. If ever there was a car built for life, this is it' (Matt Joy, CAR magazine July 2017)

Great design inside and out, roomy cabin, infotainment. XC60 is a confident alternative to the usual suspects

Ride and handling; plug-in hybrid’s mpg wholly unachievable on longer trips
