Corvette ZR1 (2008) CAR review

The new Corvette ZR1 is the world’s quickest and rawest sports car – only mad supercars and insane track cars can best it. This is a bright yellow bullet, with 638bhp (making it the most powerful ‘Vette of all time), carbonfibre bodywork and Brembo’s biggest ceramic brakes. Just 1800 ZR1s will be built each year at GM’s plant in Kentucky, with production ending in 2012.

I think a deep breath is needed… 638bhp? I guess you’d better give me the figures for the Corvette ZR1 first…

The engine is derived from the new LS3 6.2-litre V8, but in the ZR1 it’s mated to an Eaton supercharger. Thus designated LS9, it produces 638bhp, 38 ponies up on GM's original target.

Along with a lot of horsepower the LS9 engine also produces 604lb ft. Propelling a mere 1508kg – kept low thanks to that carbonfibre bonnet, roof and wings – the ZR1 will hit 60mph in 3.4 seconds, without the need to change out of first gear. About half a minute later the tiny digital speedo will indicate 200mph and those bold GM engineers claim the ZR1 will also beat a Nissan GT-R around the Nurburgring.

The ZR1 is quite a fast car then!

All this is yours for $105,000 (£60k), althought the Euro price of €135,900 works out at £108,000 in the UK. Which is less of a bargain, isn't it?

Is the Corvette ZR1 worth that much money?

Well, to sweeten the deal the Euro-spec ZR1 does come with the $10k Option pack. That means heavily bolstered two-tone electric leather seats, sat-nav and a Bose sound system. But what you care about is the drive...

Import one privately or visit the 'States, drive around a while then bring it over. Why moan about the inside when the car is priced so low? Look at it from the outside! Don't hide it in a garage, leave it where you can see it.

This is exactly the car GM needs to boost its image in Europe. Sadly, in typical GM fashion, they've missed the forest for the trees. Priced in dollars, C6 Vettes of any type are hands down, the best sports car bargains on the planet. Everyone knows they aren't high end exotics, and no one expects them to match the exotics in areas like interior refinement or snob appeal. And they are (in the US anyway) priced accordingly. A Vette is for going out and tearing up the country side with white knuckles and eyes wide open. A Vette is for scaring yourself and any women, children and small farm animals one may encounter along the way, and then parking it in the garage where it will wait faithfully, without oil leaks or any other super-model diva tantrums, until such time as you feel the need to violate more traffic laws, or even pop over to the corner store for a bottle of milk and a news paper. A Corvette is an everyday supercar you can buy and live with, and still have money left over for beer and ammunition, just as God intended. Priced in dollars, and with enough of a supply and support network, this car could have gone a long way in helping change GM's image abroad. I wish GM would keep the marketers and bean counters away from the cars.

ZR1 anyday. And when the interior gets marked (as they all do), at least you know your not ruining something expensive. I want one please.

Porsche gets away with the 911 at one price and the 911 turbo at a big premium because the basic 911 is so good that no significant weaknesses are exposed in the hyper version. By starting with a base car which is "acceptable for the price" (30% less than a 911) you wind up with a hyper car that has huge flaws as a practical daily transport. The 911 turbo, F599 and GT-R can be driven everyday, the ZR-1 is a party piece. The more Chevy pushes the envelope the more ragged the edge becomes. Niche filling to pull in extra cash for an already developed platform is fine. If GM really wants to compete with Porsche, Ferrari, etc then it's time Corvette becomes it's own brand, with more than one model. Pitch the base car against the Cayman, a derivative against the 911 and a further derivative against the supercars. Come on GM, let Chevrolet's halo car grow up.

RE: Corvette ZR1 (2008) CAR review

Whatever it costs, it looks more like a car than the 10x more expensive Bugatti, and even if it only goes 9/10ths as well I say welcome to the end of the world as we know it party. Hey, Brent crude is back down to $100 a barrel (well it was before Ike hit), so let's go. Makes more sense than any Cayenne, and as it weighs half as much I bet day to day fuel bills are tolerable , too. Come on, we might as well face it, anyone who can spend $100 thousand on a car doesn't give a t*#s about fuel bills except when in the 19th hole arguing the toss (that word again?) with the bloke who just took 40 quid a hole of him during the previous walk in pursuit of a pesky white ball. Time for Georg K to get out of the Autobild office/Lamborghini factory/GM's test track and onto the open roads for a good, big long distance test in this beastie with some of the opposition provided by car's staffers in weapons of VW's press department's choice. Let's roll. (Don't forget a derestricted M5 estate as camera car, it's got that helpful glass tailgate in the tailgate, though whether it'll stay open at 200mph, I'm not so sure. Might be fun trying)
