Does It Work? video: the waterproof key

The words 'Renault' and 'premium quality' are unlikely bed fellows. Who'd rate a Laguna on a par with a C-class? We remain sceptical, but Renault boss Carlos Ghosn reckons the French company's latest family car is so well built, it challenges the premium players for quality. In his speech at the Frankfurt Motor Show, he claimed it was so well built, 'you can even put the key card through a washing machine and it will still work.'

A small claim, but CAR thought we should put it to the test. Cue associate editor Tim Pollard, a Hoover washing machine and one Renault Laguna key card. Will it survive half an hour of spinning and wringing? Watch our tongue-in-cheek film below to find out...

Don't understand the fuss about the new Laguna one bit. I think it's quite handsome, even if it is a bit more conservative than the last model. The estate is especially smart looking, and from firs hand experience, quality levels are very impressive.

It would take a lot more to convince me to buy this ugly piece of machinery that is called the New Laguna. "Take two for the price of one" could maybe persuade me.

Having to drive the Laguna, or seeing Tim Pollards legs, tough one... Tim, get Car to send you to launches in sunny locations, they owe you big time!

Pity about those pins, I'm afraid MODELS ONE wont be on the phone! Still I am impressed, but let’s see if the TUV report in 5 years is so complimentary. After all any company can make thier cars got for 4 years, but nice video! Pity that it looks like Renault's, sorry Nissan's quality is leaching after the take over (yes electrical problems) and do wear that seat belt, it could be embarrassing if you were pulled up by PC Plod! Cheers BC

Does it work? That’s the question the CAR team asks every time the industry presents us with new-fangled tech. We'll be testing more weird claims in the coming weeks - and your suggestions are very welcome. We're already planning to test VW's self-parking technology, but we need further ideas.
