This the the VW Amarok Power Pick-Up concept car. After the 496bhp Golf GTI ‘Design Vision’, Seat racers, Skoda Rapid Sport and Audi’s stripped TTS, you’d have been forgiven for thinking we’d seen the last of 2013’s tuned VWs, but instead we’ve got an Amarok that’ll hit 62mph in just 7.9sec.
What gives the VW Amarok Power Pick-Up its, erm, power?
Under the bonnet is a 3.0-litre V6 TDI diesel engine, making a meaty 268bhp and 442lb ft. The regular Amarok makes do with a twin-turbo 2.0-litre four banger, with 178bhp and 295lb ft. The Power Pick-Up uses VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system and an eight-speed automatic gearbox to send power to massive 22in alloys, under widened wheelarches.
Tell me about the VW Amarok’s visual makeover
The ride height has been dropped 80mm from the standard car, and there’s a new chrome grille with an XXL lower air intake. The rear gets dual chromed exhausts, tinted taillights, and (hilariously) the world’s most out-of-place carbonfibre rear diffuser.
Inside the pimped-out pick-ups two-seater cabin, VW has lavished the cockpit in black, red and white trim, added Nubuck leather sports seats, and plumbed in an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system mated to a 500-watt subwoofer speaker. Don’t expect to see this ‘Amarok GTI’ coming to a building site near you, but it will be on display at the Wörthersee tuning show during May 2013.
