British duo lead shortlist for European Car Of The Year 2016

The shortlist has been announced for the Car Of The Year 2016 – and Europe’s judges have put two British-built cars into the final reckoning: the Jaguar XE and Vauxhall/Opel Astra.

Germany has mustered a pair of finalists – the new Audi A4 and BMW 7-series, while other contenders come from Sweden, Japan and the Czech Republic.

Seven cars have made the shortlist, chosen by a selection of 58 leading motoring journalists from around Europe, including CAR’s very own editor Phil McNamara and our long-serving European editor, Georg Kacher. The winners will be announced on the eve of the 2016 Geneva motor show on 29 February, picked from the following:
