Updated: 13 March 2019

► 1978 Group 2 Batmobile
► Nurburgring winner
► 3.2-litre straight-six

It’s not every day a multiple Nurburgring winner comes up for sale, but that’s exactly what happened. If you’ve got the cash, there’s now a chance to own this Group 2 1978 BMW 3.0 CSL ‘Batmobile.’

Available through William i’anson ltd, a British classic car dealer, the advert states that the car was quilt by Willi Martini, a BMW dealer and racing specialist – who happened to be based right next to the Nordschleife itself.

According to the listing, Martini started with BMW-supplied body shell, and then got to work installing a 3.0-litre, 12-valve six-cylinder engine augmented with three double choke Weber carburettors. However, that soon changed to 3.2-litre six-cylinder lump, with on slide throttle injection.

The result? The CSL weighed just 1062kg, and was capable of 168mph down the longest straight of the Nordschleife.

For more information on the car’s storied racing history, concours career, as well as its eventual journey to the UK, you can find the advert here. In the meantime, just take a look at these pictures. BMW styling is divisive now – just look at the snouty 7-series and X7 for instance – but the Batmobile remains a classic design over four decades on.

There’s no price there that we can find, but if you have to ask…
