► Spied: upgraded Mercedes-AMG GT variant
► Aero tweaks, different exhaust and wider track
► Rumoured to get ‘R’ title; expected in summer 2016
At first glance you might think this to be the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. After all, it’s clearly an aggressively bespoilered, widened and presumably higher-performance version of the existing GT.
However, our sources suggest that this is in fact a new variant of Mercedes-AMG’s sports car that will sit between the entry-level version and the mooted Black Series. There are a host of cosmetic changes that differentiate it from the previously spotted Black Series, including a central exhaust exit and a prominent rear diffuser.
It could be the case, on the other hand, that this represents the ongoing development of the Black Series, which was expected to be revealed late last year. In either instance, you can expect a significant hike in power from the twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, from the GT S’s 503bhp to somewhere in excess of 550bhp.
Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers has since indicated that the next car in the GT line would be unveiled in summer 2016, so expect updates in due course.
