The new 2015 Renault Megane has stepped out on test in Spain in prototype guise, affording our first look at the new Golf rival from France.

There’s not long to wait before we see the new 2016 model year Megane for real: it’s due to make its world debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

It looks like a pumped-up Clio!

From these spy photos, it does indeed have a little of the Clio supermini about it, especially around the rear end (although we also note echoes of the latest Seat Leon). But we hear there’s also the influence of the new Espace crossover and Laguna-replacing large car about the new Megane under all that disguise.

Despite the camouflage, it’s clear to see the prominent Renault diamond badge amid the front grille and the latest camera-based safety equipment nestling around the rear-view mirror.

This car is a five-door hatchback, but there will also be a three-door coupe-alike hatch, as well as an estate version of the Megane. It’s based on the latest Renault-Nissan medium car architecture already seen on the somewhat lacklustre Nissan Pulsar – so we’re hoping for an injection of charisma from the French engineers and designers.

And, hot hatch fans note, Renaultsport is already developing the go-faster RS versions too.
