60sec road test
Sometimes, buying the best simply isn't enough. So we can understand why businessmen and women may want to shun the sensible German limousines from Audi, BMW and Mercedes and head off-piste. Buyers now have the choice of some pretty exotic sports saloons and Aston Martin is at the vanguard with its Rapide four-door. Essentially, a stretched and scrubbed-up DB9, this is a rear-drive limo with the beating heart of a sports car. If you're in the front seat, you'll love it: the handling is sharper than most rivals' and that sonorous 6.0 V12 provides plenty of fireworks. If you're languishing in the rear, you'll miss the creature comforts and space of the S-class or an A8 LWB. But then you'll know before you buy which sort of fast four-door you're after, won't you?

Rivals to consider
Bentley Continental Flying Spur, Maserati Quattroporte, Porsche Panamera
So much classier than an S-class
Neither as commodious in the important rear-seat compartment, nor as polished in execution as the Mercedes benchmark
