60sec road test
This car arguably democratised super design in modern cars. Cast your mind back to the mid 1990s, and the automotive landscape was skewed towards aero jellymould design. Along rumbled the Mk1 TT, with its Bauhaus-influenced couture and changed all that overnight. It's hard to overestimate its import. Didn't this model spark the postmodern design revolution that begat modern Mini and retro Beetle? We'd say it did. And now the third generation is here, little has changed. This is still the slickest, most style-conscious mainstream coupe on sale today - and you can choose the slick soft-top too. Both are brilliant choices, democratising sports car fun for the masses. Build quality is excellent, posing power assured. Will it win over fans of serious sports cars, such as Porsche Boxsters? Probably not, in our experience. But that misses the point. You buy a TT to look after your bank balance (competitive residuals, low running costs) and to feel good about motoring in everyday driving. And with a Grade-A cabin like this, we're not surprised. With amazing widescreen adaptive instruments to bring your data and mapping to life, you'll feel a million dollars before you've even turned a wheel.
