BMW M5 – Ronin

Published: 20 October 2008 Updated: 26 January 2015

Ranking: 29

Year of release: 1998

The car: BMW 535i (E34)

Why it’s special: Come on! The rear-drive Five is a central part in one of the greatest car chases of our times. Plenty of slip-sliding action to keep oversteer fans at bay.

Best bit: The final chase scene through Paris.

Pub fact: Is it really a 535i? Various shots in the movie show an M5, or what at least looks like an M5. The latter is used for some shots, but not the whole chase.

Plot overview: A group of rogue outcasts are hired to steal a case from some ex-KGB spies. But one of them has his own agenda

For: The 5-series being ragged by Natascha McElhone through Paris

Against: The Peugeot 406 driven by Robert De Niro manages to keep up with it

CAR verdict: Just to play a part in one of Ronin’s car chases is enough to give the BMW an honourable mention, but being humbled by a Peugeot means it will never achieve greatness
