X appeal? New BMW X4 SUV unveiled

Is BMW’s fresh X3 not sleek enough for you? The new BMW X4 is here to save the day and you can order one now from £43k. We’ll see it in the metal at the 2018 Geneva motor show.

BMW has sold an X4 since 2014 and racked up 200,000 sales worldwide. The headlines of the new one include an all-new look, fresh engines and not one but two M Performance models.

Tell me about that design

Well, put short: it’s an X3 with a sleeker rear end. The front is recognisably similar to the X3, with chunky bumpers and huge kidney grilles. All models have adaptive LED headlights as standard.

The rear end is similar in design to the X2, with slim rear lights and chunky exhausts but, thankfully, BMW has neglected to add a set of brand badges to the C pillars.

The X4 is 81mm longer, has a 54mm stretched wheelbase, 37mm wider and 3mm lower than its predecessor.

And what about inside?

It’s not much of a shock in here – standard BMW fare. Driver-centric dashboard, solid materials, iDrive-controlled infotainment system with digital instruments and cockpit details lifted out of the 5-series.

BMW X4 interior

Vernasca leather upholstery is standard in the UK and the red detailing you see pictured is bespoke to the X4. Trim levels start at Sport and rise to M Sport and M Sport X.

Engines and specs

Three diesels and one petrol make up the range. There’s a 20d four-cylinder diesel and an all-new M Performance-derived M40d, with a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel making up the range initially.

An M40i, much like the X3, and a 30d diesel will be available later in the year, and xDrive will be available.

See below for the full spec range:

► X4 20d – 187bhp, 295lb ft, 8.0sec, 132mph, 52.3mpg, 142g/km, £42,900
► X4 30d – 261bhp. 457lb ft, 5.8sec, 149mph, 47.9mpg, 156g/km, £TBC
► X4 M40d – 322bhp, 502lb ft, 4.9sec, 155mph, 44.1mpg, 170g/km, £55,315
► X4 M40i – 355bhp, 369lb ft, 4.8sec, 155mph, 31.4mpg, 209g/km, £TBC

Anything else of note?

BMW X4 front quarter

Rear passengers get 27mm of extra space compared to before and the rear seats can be split folded 40:20:40. Boot space is rated at 525 litres with the rear seats up or 1430 litres with the seats down.

When can I buy a BMW X4?

Orders open on 15 February, with a starting price of £42,900 for an X4 20d Sport. After its show debut in Geneva, we’ll see the hotter petrol and 30d versions join the ranks.
