► Pininfarina badged EV hypercar due 2020
Fabled Italian design consultancy Pininfarina is branching out and building its own electric car brand, it was announced today. The first model will be an electric hypercar and it’s due to launch in 2020.
It’s a reflection of how electrification is reshaping the car industry, enabling new players to leapfrog established manufacturers and start selling EVs in quick order.
Not that Pininfarina is a newcomer; it’s been designing cars for 88 years and has specialised in low-volume production for quite a few of those.

What can we expect of the 2020 Pininfarina electric hypercar?
The styling specialists used the Italian round of the Formula E race to announce its new launch, in partnership with Indian automotive giant the Mahindra Group.
Automobili Pininfarina is the new company and it’ll be based in Italy, albeit with plenty of financial and business assistance from Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, which brings a slew of electric car know-how.
‘The company will design, engineer and manufacture high-technology, extreme performance, luxury electric vehicles for the most discerning global customers,’ the statement in Rome said. ‘Automobili Pininfarina will combine Pininfarina’s legendary automotive design prowess with Mahindra’s growing electric vehicle (EV) expertise gained from its participation in the Formula E electric racing car championship. Automobili Pininfarina plans to launch its first model, a Pininfarina-badged electric hypercar, in 2020.’
Mahindra is racing in the fledgling Formula E championship (above); it is currently second in the manufacturers and drivers’ championship.
The boss of Pininfarina on his new EV launch
Paolo Pininfarina, chairman of Pininfarina SpA, said: ‘We are pleased to welcome the new company, Automobili Pininfarina which represents an additional client for Pininfarina SpA, joining the list of the many prestigious car makers for which we will be designing cars in the future. This project helps me and my family to realise my grandfather’s dream of seeing outstanding innovative cars solely branded Pininfarina on the roads.’
Automobili Pininfarina will be led by CEO Michael Perschke, a veteran of the Volkswagen Group in India.
