VW Sport Coupe Concept GTE: it’s the new Passat CC

Updated: 04 March 2015

► A bit of a mouthful: essentially new CC
► Four-door ‘coupaloon’ look
► Hybrid power for concept car

Volkswagen dropped a hint of the new coupe-inspired Passat derivative to replace the swooping CC four-door at the 2015 Geneva motor show

The new VW Sport Coupe Concept GTE points to the next-generation of the Mercedes-Benz CLS rival for those on a Volkswagen-spec budget.

It’s a large, low-slung four-seater, with a typically Passat vibe going on in the wardrobe department. It’s all sharp creases and VW precision, albeit livened-up by the mustard yellow paint job and Geneva motor show-spec 21-inch wheels.

Note also how the headlamps and grille merge into a fresh, more distinctive – although slightly fussy to these eyes – face.

VW Sport Coupe Concept GTE: the tech story

This is a motor show concept car, so there’s naturally a hybrid powertrain nestling under the metalwork.

It’s based on the group’s MQB box-of-bits architecture; a V6 TSI petrol engine and two electric motors feature here, giving a combined total of 375bhp.

Wolfsburg claims it’s hyper-efficient, citing a 136mpg combined economy figure. It’s a plug-in hybrid, so those figures will depend on the ability to start your journey with a full battery.

Will this car replace the CC?

It’s a good indication of what’s to come from VW, although the company says it is ‘positioned above today’s Volkswagen CC.’

Sounds to us like they’re trying to push the model more upmarket.

On the other side of the Volkswagen stand was the newly refreshed Touran, more of which soon.
