Audi will showcase its next generation of in-car entertainment systems at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next month.

Ingolstadt has confirmed that ‘Audi will turn the inside of the car into an amusement park’ at the show, revealing plans to show:

  • ‘A completely new on-the-road entertainment format’
  • ‘A special movie theatre experience inside a luxury saloon’

These are tech advances we can expect to see on road cars soon. However, precious few details are available yet, so we’ll have to stay tuned for CES, which opens its doors on 8 January 2019.

It’s clear that Audi is preparing its cars for the autonomous age, when drivers will – eventually, once Level 4 or 5 driverless systems are widespread – be able to focus on consuming media rather than driving.

Huge widescreen interiors are planned by some car makers (NB this is not an Audi cabin)

The CES innovations will showcase new ‘immersive’ ways of enjoying movies and media on the move, with full visual/audio/sensory experiences planned. This will doubtless bring joy to the tech savvy, but many traditionalists will worry about the potential for distraction in cars, as cabins become stuffed with more and more electro-gadgets.

Audi has attended CES annually since 2011. Around 170,000 visitors are expected and some 4000 trade exhibitors have reserved stand space.
