You’re looking at the world’s first Porsche Charging Lounge – a new brand-specific charging solution for owners of electric Porsche cars.

The first pilot site has opened in Bingen am Rhein in Germany, but Porsche is already planning further branded charging stations at major trunk roads across Germany, Austria and Switzerland. If successful, the chain is likely to expand to the UK.

The Porsche Charging Lounge is located two minutes from the A60/A61 autobahn junction and offers six 300kW fast chargers and four 22kW points. The manufacturer claims the Alpitronic chargers can be upgraded in future to 400kW speeds and already use energy from renewable sources.

‘By 2030 we want over 80% of the cars that we deliver to be all-electric,’ said Porsche chairman Oliver Blume. ‘This ambitious ramp-up requires a high-performance and dense fast-charging network. The exclusive Porsche Charging Lounges are making an important contribution to this. They are a barrier-free, sustainable and state-of-the-art addition.’

Consider the launch of a proprietary Porsche network a response to the success of the Tesla Supercharger network.

What is a Porsche Charging Lounge?

These first official pictures show the Porsche-designed facilities, engineered to have a premium mood. Note the architectural details such as a floating forecourt canopy to keep users dry when plugging in and the zeitgeisty decor inside, akin to a business-class lounge at an airport.

Drivers will need a Porsche ID to charge up and access the lounge while their Taycan (and future electric Porsches) are charging up. The waiting area (above) will offer soft drinks, wifi and snacks, and is air-conditioned via a heat pump using solar panels and the promise of no fossil fuels, according to the company.

The Porsche Charging Service is integrated in the brand’s vehicle sat-nav, so the Porsche Charging Lounge will be displayed in navigation instructions. Billing is handled centrally and Porsche says the charging rate will be charged at a flat 33 cents per kilowatt hour.
