I think I got carried away with this year’s PCotY logistics. Tasked with getting all the great performance cars of the past 12 months together for our annual extravaganza, I went a bit mad. That’s why, in one very wet week in Anglesey, 29 cars descended on the Ty Croes circuit and the roads just south in Snowdonia.
By my calculation, and you can see the list below, the total value of all the cars was just shy of £1.9m. And that’s before you consider that these were press office cars, with every option on them. There was over £25k on the SL63, £18k on the 911 and a frankly unbelievable £35k on the KTM, but it still didn’t have a windscreen.
It’s not just about the numbers
PCoTY is also about the passion and the chance to get all sorts of different cars together. So while the 123d and Gumpert Apollo might both have twin turbos, they couldn’t be further apart, and while the SL showed off with its folding-metal roof, three of our cars didn’t have any weather protection.
But it didn’t matter to any of us because PCoTY is all about the passion. It’s why, when I was sorting the logistics, I set it up so I had to drive to Caterham to pick up the R500 on the Saturday before, and why the KTM was delivered to me on the Sunday.
And then, at the end of it all, I volunteered to drive the Lotus 2-Eleven home. Despite the rain, the soaking seat, the lack of rear vision, and nearly being killed by a clueless Chrysler Voyager driver, it was probably the best drive I’ve ever had.
