The large, comfortable XJ saloon is the pinnacle of the Jag range, and the latest one combines revolutionary styling and a superlative cabin with technical wizardry and strong pace, thanks to turbodiesel V6 and V8 engines. 60sec road test
The big XJ caused quite a rumpus when it was launched; home counties moustaches and G&Ts were quivering with the modernist couture foisted upon this most stately of Jaguar saloons. But time has mellowed the looks and the XJ remains a class competitor as an alternative to the mostly German competition. We're still of the view that the front and rear ends look like they're from different cars, however... But the party piece is inside, where the cabin is quite an event. We love the wraparound dashboard design, which looks like it's from a top-end motorboat. Pick the long-wheelbase XJL if you want maximum rear legroom. On the go, the four-door saloon shrinks around you, aided by that lightweight aluminium construction. It feels as nimble and agile as the smaller XF. And that's praise indeed.
