60sec road test
The latest Mazda 3 is the latest addition to the company’s Skyactiv engineering programme - meaning it is a slightly alternative take on how to save fuel. No hybrids here; the company has a preference for light weight, highly optimised petrol and diesel engines and clever systems such as energy recuperation to harvest the excess energy created under braking. It’s a slick-looking thing, wearing the latest company ‘Kodo’ front end and you can choose from two bodystyles. We preferred the lower-powered 118bhp petrol model to the more powerful 163bhp 2.0. All share a well judged chassis with a surprising amount of fun on offer.
The one we’d buy
The lower-powered petrol model
The one we’d avoid like the plague
No such thing as a bad 3
Rivals to consider
Audi A3, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, VW Golf
Style, fun to drive, clever fuel-saving tech
There’s no MPS go-faster one in the works this time
