The Mercedes-Benz S-class is the benchmark luxury car – a four-door limo to challenge the BMW 7-series, Audi A8 and Jaguar XJ for imperial executive comfort. The mainstay is the four-door saloon, but the CL coupe has now been rebadged as the S-class Coupe, which makes sense to us for that is what it is. 60sec road test
The five-star rating says it all really: the S dominates most luxury car tests CAR magazine conducts and for good reason. Daimler has been perfecting the art of driver and passenger pampering for decades and the latest S-class espouses everything they know about ultimate luxury. The build quality is first-rate, the gadgetry amazing but discrete. Given enough leeway with the cost of options, you can even spec a Magic Carpet Ride that scans the road ahead for bumps and prepares the suspension accordingly. Comfort is guaranteed, impeccable refinement a given from a range of very muted engines. Impressively, Mercedes offers a huge array of engines, meaning you can pick the powerplant to suit you needs and budget. It’s hard to look past the excellent entry-level diesels though. Should you want to show off V12 power is available in the S600 and the barmy AMG models bring a dose of extraordinary power to proceedings. Also take a good look at the two hybrid options if you drive/are driven mostly in town and have access to on-street charging, although in this country almost all buyers will be better off with the diesels.
