BMW X1 (2009): the clearest shots yet

Published: 18 June 2009 Updated: 26 January 2015

These are the most revealing pictures yet of BMW’s new X1, showing it essentially undisguised. The first shot of the undisguised but blurry white X1 is an official BMW picture, released on the company’s Facebook site, just as it did with a few teaser detail photos earlier this month. And the red X1 was caught by our snapper as the X1 entered BMW’s Nurburgring test centre after a workout on the infamous Nordschleife racetrack. All the shots show the mini-SUV has changed little since the BMW unveiled the Concept X1 at 2008’s Paris motor show.

Talk me through the BMW X1 again

As the badge suggests it’s a sub-X3 SUV. Like the 1-series, the X1 uses 3-series architecture, but the X1 desgination means it will actually end up shorter than a Three saloon, but taller than a Touring, plus it’s lighter too. Both four-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive versions are expected to be available, while at launch the X1 will come with a 2.0-litre diesel (in either 175bhp or 201bhp guises) and a 268bhp 3.0-litre petrol.
