Mercedes-Benz will replace the slinky CLS four-door in 2011. Last week we brought you the spyshots of the regular CLS II, today we can bring you the scoop photos of the racy AMG version, the CLS 63 AMG.

It’s the cherry on top of the CLS II pie – the red-hot sporty version that few will buy, but many will lust after. You can read our report on the secret new CLS family (codenamed C218) here, but now for the details on the AMG version.

What powers the new 2011 Merc CLS AMG?

This is a little confusing. Disregard the reports claiming it’ll stick with the 6.2-litre V8 powering the E63 AMG – despite the same name, the new go-faster CLS will in fact premiere AMG’s brand spanking new 5.5-litre V8.

Breathed on by direct injection and twin turbos, AMG’s new lump will go on to power all future big fast Mercs. Despite its drop in capacity, those bi-blowers will ensure a healthy 570bhp for the sort of inane warp speeds and .

When can I buy the new CLS 63 AMG?

Not until mid-2011, we hear. Why not call it the CLS 55 AMG? Because buyers would be put off by the shrunken number and feel shortchanged. So CLS 63 AMG it is, despite the 5.5-litre V8.

The CLS has set a cat among the pigeons in the exec sector. Originally conceived as a ‘Jag fighter’, the CLS has gone to spawn numerous copycat designs: VW’s Passat CC, Audi’s forthcoming A7 and there will be more. Small wonder, as the CLS has sold 40% ahead of its original target.
