Volvo XC90 LWB test hack: a super-sized SUV is coming

► Spyshots of LWB Volvo XC90
► Strange test mule scooped
► Stretched SUV, pick-up or Popemobile?

This extraordinary-looking Volvo XC90 test hack has been spied testing in the wilds of Scandinavia – suggesting that the Swedes are readying a new kind of SUV.

Could a properly LWB XC make sense with Volvo’s Asian ownership? Geely has already fast-tracked the XC90 Excellence, a four-seater limo-spec model aimed at the popular chauffeur market in China.

What else could the XC90 be?

Commentators suggest it could be all sorts of different models. Others who’ve spied this red mule have posited it could be:

  • An armoured Volvo XC90
  • Volvo’s pick-up
  • Another type of commercial vehicle (CV) application
  • A Popemobile

Our photographer reckons it had an extra 10 inches inserted in the wheelbase – and the chunky roof-mounted ballast gives credence to a CV application.
