It seems Aston Martin is creating a fleet of luxury vehicles designed to appeal to the power-crazed baddies in action movies, rather than just British special agents.

Along with designing (and even promising to build) an actual submarine – named Neptune – the British luxury car maker has also put pen to paper on the concept for a luxury aircraft, named the Volante Vision Concept.

Aston is working with Rolls-Royce, Cranfield Aerospace and Cranfield University on the project and promises that it will have vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) functionality.

If you’re wondering why, you’re not the only one. Congestion is only expected to build in cities, so Aston and its partners on the project were thinking laterally on how to solve the issue. Aston Martin boss, Andy Palmer, said ‘we need to look at alternative solutions to reduce congestion, pollution and improve mobility. Air travel will be a crucial part in the future of transportation, the Vision Volante Concept is the ultimate luxury mobility solution.’

Specs are basically non-existent at present, but Aston Martin says that the Volante Vision Concept will use ‘the latest advances in aerospace, electrification and autonomous technologies, coupled with Aston Martin’s signature design.’ That basically means the aircraft will have self-driving (flying?) technology and could have a hybrid propulsion system.
