► 200,000 Volkswagen Golf Rs!
► Milestone is a black Performance Pack
► Delivered near CAR’s Peterborough office

Chances are, you’ve seen plenty Volkswagen Golf R models whether you’re in the UK or wider Europe, so it’s no surprise that the hot Golf has reached a production milestone. VW has produced 200,000 Golf R models, with the very car that reached the milestone being delivered at VW’s Robinsons Peterborough dealership – just a stone’s throw from the CAR offices.

VW R boss Jost Capito attended the small ceremony at the dealer and handed over the keys to long-time performance Golf customer, Keith Williamson. He already owns a Mk5 Golf R32 and a Mk6 Golf GTI.

So what’s the spec? Williamson’s Golf R is a three-door, Deep Black pearl hatch fitted with the Performance Pack, optional Akrapovic exhaust and 19-inch Spielberg alloys. ‘I couldn’t wait to take delivery of my car and the fact that it’s the 200,000th makes it particularly special,’ he said.

Capito, executive director of Volkswagen R, talked with CAR at the event, and says that this is what the R brand is all about; ‘If you can make a guy like this happy, with a really good, well-engineered and high-performing car, that gives me satisfaction. He will love it every time he’s in the car – it’s this that gives me the satisfaction!’

Who doesn’t want more from their hot hatch? VW is happy to oblige with the Golf R thanks to a new Performance Pack and optional titanium exhaust from Akrapovic.

If you fancy a bit more R from your hot Golf, the Performance Pack complements the 306bhp and 4Motion all-wheel drive system with a new set of ‘R-Performance’ brakes, which save weight and add some bonus brake feel.

The 155mph top speed has been derestricted, so the Golf R hatch with the Performance Pack will reach 166mph, while the estate will hit 168mph. New 19-inch ‘Spielberg’ alloys and a more pronounced rear spoiler complete the job. The Performance Pack will cost you £2,300.

Plus, if you want your R to sounds more ‘ARRRR’, on top of the Perf. Pack you can also spec an Akrapovic titanium exhaust for an extra £2,975. The throatier system is 7kg lighter than the standard and uses valve control tech to modulate when to fully let rip.

The Performance Pack can only be fitted from new straight out of the factory, but not retrospectively.

If you want the whole lot, you’ll have to fork out £5,275 on top of the list price of a shiny new Golf R hatch or estate.
