VW Golf GTI Next Level and Estate GMotion: meet Worthersee 2018’s new concepts

► 405bhp GTI…
► …and a CNG Estate

Along with Volkswagen making its own new car for the Worthersee 2018 show, two new cars from the apprentices based in both Wolfsburg and Saxony have been revealed.

The first is a 405bhp VW Golf GTI (pictured) – yes, really. It’s named the GTI ‘Next Level’ and it’s all a bit like Need For Speed Underground 2, only far less tacky. All that power is squeezed out of a 2.0-litre 4cyl turbo and sent through VW’s seven-speed DSG auto.

It’s just a two-seater, mind; the Wolfsburg apprentice team filled the back full of subwoofers, loudspeakers and 3D-printed mounts for the whole thing. The apprentices even developed apps for the LED monitor inside, LED underfloor lighting and the retractable cargo floor.

The second is from the Saxony apprentice team, based at VW’s Sachsen facility. It’s a white Golf Estate that runs on compressed natural gas, or CNG. The concept’s full name is the Golf Estate TGI GMotion, and features a 1.5-litre engine that runs on CNG, mated to a seven-speed auto and all-wheel drive. It’s been born out of the team’s desire to show that CNG is a suitable alternative fuel.

Coil-over suspension features, allowing the estate to be lowered by up to 40mm and four-piston calipers are standard. Chrome trim, sports seats with red stitching and an embroidered GMotion logo are inside, too.
