Open-topped elegance: Mercedes is testing a Maybach SL convertible

Published: 09 July 2024

► Maybach-themed version of the SL planned
► Redesigned grille, bumper, and Maybach-styled exhaust pipes
► Luxurious interior, probably

The Mercedes SL can be seen as a comfortable version of the AMG GT, but soon there’ll be an even softer, more luxurious version of the open-topped Benz. Our spy photographers have snapped pictures of a new Maybach-themed SL hot weather testing, and it features some big changes over the standard car.

A Maybach?

Correct. Mercedes is still using the Maybach name to denote super-luxurious version of existing cars, and this new SL will be no different. Styling-wise there are some big changes of the standard car: liberal use of camouflage means we’re expecting a different grille, as well as a different bumper from the off.

In addition to a resigned face, the Maybach SL also sports tweaked exhaust pipes that match the style of existing Maybach models. And the final clue? That’s got to be the Maybach logo at the rear.

Anything else?

We’d imagine the exterior differences pale in comparison to what Stuttgart’s interior department has done inside the SL. This is a Maybach and luxury will be the blame of the game, so expect lots of chrome, fine leather and wood. The prototype car shown here appears to feature a fetching red leather interior.

What will it be powered by?

CAR understands the Maybach SL will be powered by the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 that powers the existing SL.
